The thermal insulation in the transition area from the glass to the frame is affected by the thermal conductivity of the spacer.

Due to the ever growing demands on the thermal insulation performance of windows and doors, this transition region has been highlighted as a vulnerability. Therefore, there has been an intensive search in recent years for alternative spacer materials. And in the meanwhile, there are now spacers with a low thermal conductivity. Insulating glazing units with these spacers in the edge seals are therefore referred to as warm edge.
